**QUICK UPDATE**
BY THE NUMBERS
27 April 2021/Tuesday/920am PDT
About a week ago the CDC released some numbers regarding COVID vaccination:
84 million Americans now fully vaccinated (two weeks after the second dose of either Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines or two weeks after the single dose Johnson & Johnson adenovirus vector vaccine).
There have been approximately 6,000 cases of vaccine breakthrough in the United States. 30% of the cases that occurred, the individual was completely asymptomatic. 6,000 cases is 0.007% of all fully vaccinated Americans.
Of the 6,000 vaccine breakthrough cases, 400 were hospitalized and 74 died.
So I calculated out the rates per 100,000 people:
Vaccine breakthrough when fully immunized: 7.1/100K
Hospitalization for COVID when fully immunized: 0.47/100K
Hospitalization for COVID when not vaccinated: 522/100K
Death from COVID when fully immunized: 0.09/100K
Death from COVID when unvaccinated: 650/100K
Background CVST (central venous sinus thrombosis) occurence: 0.5/100K
CVST occurrence with Johnson & Johnson vaccination: 0.08/100K
CVST occurrence with AstraZeneca vaccination: 0.4/100K
For context:
Current COVID rate (new daily cases) for Texas: 15.3/100K
Worst day of the COVID holiday surge in Texas (15 January): 90.6/100K
Worst day of the COVID holiday surge in the United States (8 January): 89.6/100K
Current US seven-day average of new cases: 16.8/100K
Current India seven day average of new cases: 24.3/100K
I have met a vaccine breakthrough in the course of my work on Native American reservations- female, in her 70s, multiple high risk conditions. Tested positive three weeks after her second Moderna vaccination. Completely asymptomatic and no residual effects from having COVID.
