What Does the Boom Overture Supersonic Airliner Design Have That Will Change Historical Paradigms?
We posed this question to aviation journalist Jon Ostrower given that the history of commercial airliner development has not favored designs with specialized capabilities.
We posed the question to aviation journalist Jon Ostrower that what does the Boom Overture supersonic aircraft offer that will break the historical paradigm in the commercial aviation history that aircraft with specialized capabilities are uneconomical?

The historical record of commercial aircraft development shows that specialized capabilities like STOL in the BAe-146 and Dash 7 or high speed/supersonic flight like the Convair 990 and Concorde have not made economic sense when faced with real world market conditions.
Jon’s reporting on Boom suggests that the march of technological progress since Concorde was fielded is the answer. Interestingly, he pointed out that the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is 70% more efficient per seat mile than the Boeing 707.
Jon is the Editor-in-Chief of The Air Current; prior to launching TAC in June 2018, he was the aviation editor for CNN Worldwide, having joined the network in 2016 after four and a half years at the Wall Street Journal. Jon covered Boeing, aviation safety and the global aerospace business for the WSJ. Prior to that, he was the editor of Flightblogger for Flight Global and Flight International magazine from 2007-2012.
